How to split a bill when friends use Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, and Apple Cash

Last updated October 6, 2026

When your friends use different payment apps, work out each person's exact share first, then let each person pay you in the app they already use. You don't need everyone on the same app. You just need to share your username for each one.

What each app needs from you

AppShare thisGood to know
VenmoYour @usernamePopular with friend groups in the US
Cash AppYour $cashtagWorks with just a $cashtag, no bank details
ZelleThe email or phone number linked to your bankBuilt into most US banking apps, so many people already have it
PayPalYour email or PayPal.me linkUseful for friends outside the US
Apple CashYour phone number (iPhone to iPhone)Sent through Messages or Wallet

The steps

1. Split the bill by item so each person has an exact total (see how to split a bill by item). 2. Send everyone their amount along with your username for each app you use. 3. Each person pays in whichever app they prefer, and you check them off.

Tips

Send amounts while everyone is still at the table, since people pay fastest right after the meal. Put the restaurant name in the payment note so it's easy to match up later. And double-check usernames before anyone sends money, because payments to the wrong person are hard to reverse.

Tabby puts all of this on one screen: each friend sees their exact share and a button for every app the host added, so your aunt can pay with Zelle and your roommate with Cash App. Tabby never touches the money; payments go straight to you.

The fast way: Tabby, the app ("Split with Tabby" on the App Store), does this for you. Scan the receipt, share one link, and everyone taps what they had. Tabby adds tax and tip in proportion and shows each person a button to pay you back. Join the waitlist to get it at launch.
